SICILY

"Visiting Italy without going to Sicily leaves no image in the spirit. It is Sicily that is the key to everything!"

Most Sicilians consider themselves, and their island, a separate entity. Coming from the Italian mainland, it's very noticeable that Sicily (Sicilia) has a different feel, that socially and culturally you are all but out of Europe. Sicilian dialect, for example, is still widely spoken in both cities and countryside, varying from place to place; and the food is noticeably different from elsewhere in Italy, spicier and with more emphasis on fish and vegetables; even the flora echoes the change of temperament - oranges, lemons (introduced by the Arabs), prickly pears and palms are ubiquitous.

Sicily

The largest island in the country is a diverse and popular tourist island, famous for its archaeology, seascape and unique Sicilian cuisine. It is one of the pearls of Southern Italy and can be discovered, understood and experienced through a series of itineraries dedicated to areas of interest ranging from nature to history and traditions.

PALERMO
, is a filthy, bustling, noisy city with an unrivalled display of Norman art and architecture and Baroque churches, combined with a warren of medieval streets and markets. Heading east, there's no better place in Sicily for a traditional family sea, sun and sand holiday than Cefalù, with a magnificent golden sandy beach.

TAORMINA
, is a spot of infinite loveliness, the land of Dolce far niente - of sweet do nothing. The town lies in an
elevated position of amazing, almost unique beauty, affording magnificent views combining sea and sky of a marvelous blue, miles of a curving coastline and picturesque mountain scenery, while the majestic pyramid of Mt. Etna on one side constitutes a scene of indescribable beauty.

MOUNT ETNA
, is a must! The greatest active volcano in Europe, is on Sicily's eastern coast and is one of the fundamental stops for those wanting to discover this region. Its spectacular eruptions have created unique landscapes over the centuries. Discover the volcano with our personalized tour. This mountain lives, breathes and transforms itself and each time it awakes.

SYRACUSE
, once the most important city of the Greek world, nowadays important Jewish spot in Sicily. We will spend a full day starting in Acradina, the site of the earliest Jewish settlement, then visit the catacombs of S. Giovanni and the crypt of S. Marciano, who, according to the legend, was killed by the Jews of the city. Then, we'll move to the island of Ortigia and walk in the narrow streets of the Giudecca (the ancient Jewish quarter).

AGRIGENTO
, one of the most important towns of Magna Graecia. The famous Valley of the Temples - surrounded by green olive groves, almond trees, citrus orchards and vineyards that stretch out to the sea with all its imposing and elegant monuments - fantastically evokes an atmosphere of 2500 years ago, when the ancient Akagras Agrigentum was a center of power and learning.

TRAPANI
, itself a salty old port with connections to the rough, sunblasted islands of the Egadi archipelago and Pantelleria. The first stop is to the Temples in Segesta, one of the major cities of the Elymian people (one of the three indigenous peoples of Sicily). Continue to Erice, wander through its' ancient streets and visit some of the famous homemade pastry shops, world-renown for marzipan candies and other delicacies like almond and pistachio pastries.

ACTIVITIES: FOOD & WINE TOUR

Sicily has been producing wine and olive oil since the days of the Greeks and the Romans: your private guide will first take you to a wine shop where you will sample some of the region's finest wines and olive oil. Then on to the Capo, one of the city's three medieval street markets. A stop for lunch at Antica Foccacceria di San Francesco, founded in 1836, is a delight to all food lovers: arancine (stuffed rice balls), caponata (Sicilian ratatouille with eggplants) and pane ca' meusa(beef spleen and lung sandwiches) are just a few of the mouth-watering dishes you can try.

THE GODFATHER COUNTRY

A scenic drive runs inland to Savoca which is considered one of the most attractive places in the environ of Taormina. Bar Vitelli with a gorgeous terrace, has a collection of photographs taken when Francis Ford Coppola shot some scenes of "The Godfather II". Free time for a "granita" in the Bar Vitelli then walk to the Chiesa Madre with its fine 16C portal surmonted by a beautifully carved oculus and the coat of arms of Savoca, bearing the elderberry branch from which the name of the town is supposed to derive.

SARDINIA

"This land resembles no other place. Sardinia is something else. Enchanting spaces and distances to travel-nothing finished, nothing definitive. It is like freedom itself".

The island may seem less remote nowadays - and it's certainly more accessible, with frequent flights serving Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero - but large tracts remain remarkably untouched by tourism, particularly the interior. The island's main draw, however, is its dazzling coastline, with some of the cleanest beaches in Italy. Although not famed for its cultural riches, the island does hold some surprises, not least the remains of the various civilizations that passed through here.

Sardinia

Sardinia is a large island some 250 kilometers west of the Italian coastline. It includes several popular tourist attractions and has several beaches and archaeological ruins. D.H. Lawrence found it exotically different when he passed through here in 1921 - "lost", as he put it, "between Europe and Africa and belonging to nowhere".

CAGLIARI, the lively capital with good accommodation and restaurants, it makes a useful base for exploring the southern third of the island. Drive along the busy modern waterfront of Cagliari with beautiful 19th century palaces, then walk to the ancient Medieval quarter "Castello". We do not forget to visit the indoor Fruit and vegetable market where all the Sardinian colorful fruit, a wide range of sheep "Pecorino" cheese, fish and vegetable are nicely displayed in the many stalls.

Of these, the Gennargentu range, covering the heart of the island, holds the highest peaks and provides rich evidence of the island's traditional culture, in particular the numerous village festivals.
